I met Tommy Smothers while attending the International Jugglers' Association (IJA) festival in Las Vegas. The Smothers Brothers were performing at the Debbie Reynold's Theatre. I attended the show with approximately 30 of the nation's top yo-yo performers; and as luck would have it, I was sitting next to one of Tommy's personal yo-yo instructors.
After the show, Tommy came out to meet his fellow yo-yo enthusiasts. After taking many photos of my friends with Tommy, one of them said to me, "Why don't you get in the picture?" It seemed like a great opportunity to visit with Tommy, so I said, "Sure."
Knowing Tommy has such a great sense of humor, I decided to play with it a bit. I told him, "I've always loved your TV comedy variety show and your comedy albums; and I especially liked your performance tonight." then I said to Tommy, "I've always wanted to meet you... Dicky." Without missing a beat, Tommy replied with a glint in his eye, "Mom always loved him best."
I've met a lot of celebrities over the years, but haven't been much for pursuing photos with them. In this case, it was such a natural extension of the wonderful time we all were having. It seemed appropriate and now I have a photo keepsake. I'll always remember that evening of entertainment and personal interaction fondly. |
